What is Markdown Room?

Markdown Room is a Windows app for reading and writing the documents already on your PC. Markdown notes, EPUB books and PDFs open in one quiet window, with nothing to sign up for and nothing uploaded.

Point it at the folders you already use and it shows what is in them. Files are not copied into a private library or moved anywhere else. They stay exactly where they are, and your edits are saved straight back to them.

What Markdown Room does

Markdown, rendered properly

GitHub-flavoured Markdown with headings, tables, task lists, footnotes, block quotes, links and images. Code blocks are coloured by language, maths is typeset as real equations, and a contents panel jumps between headings in long documents.

Repairs notes saved from AI chats

Equations in AI chat exports often arrive as a tangle of symbols and source text. Markdown Room fixes the common cases so they render as the formula they were meant to be, and emoji and symbols display as they did originally.

An editor that keeps the Markdown visible

Headings look like headings and bold looks bold as you type, while every #, * and ` stays on screen. Changes save automatically, and if another program edits the same file, Markdown Room asks which version to keep instead of overwriting it.

EPUB books that read like books

A paginated reader with page turns from the arrow keys or a click in the margin, chapter-to-chapter navigation, pictures and cover plates, and selectable text.

PDFs with desktop controls

Pages at their true size with a page strip for jumping around, zoom and fit, continuous or single-page view, text search, the document's own outline, inverted colours for night reading, and support for password-protected files.

Eight reading themes

Paper, Sepia, Solar, Dim, Black, Contrast, Nord and Terminal, applied to Markdown and EPUB alike, with adjustable text size and line spacing and a choice of serif, sans-serif or monospace type.

Markdown to PDF, on your PC

Export a searchable PDF with typeset maths, your choice of page size and margins, an optional table of contents and page numbers, without the document ever leaving your computer.

Several folders in the sidebar, list or grid view, search, and sorting and filtering by type. Each file shows how far through it you are, and every document reopens exactly where you left off.

What files can Markdown Room open?

Markdown files (.md, .markdown, .mdx, .mdown and .mkd), EPUB books and PDFs.

Does Markdown Room upload my documents?

No. Documents are read from and saved to your own folders and are never uploaded. The app only goes online when you open a link, or when a document shows a picture from the web, and that can be switched off in Settings.

Does it move my files into its own library?

No. You point it at folders you already use and your files stay exactly where they are. Edits are saved back to the original files.

Can I edit Markdown, or only read it?

Both. The editor styles your Markdown as you type while keeping the syntax visible, and saves changes automatically.

Can it export Markdown to PDF?

Yes, locally on your PC. You choose the page size and margins, whether to include a table of contents and page numbers, and whether to keep your reading theme's colours. The text stays real, searchable text.

Does it open password-protected PDFs?

Yes.

Which keyboard shortcuts does it support?

Ctrl+O adds a folder, Ctrl+N creates a new note, Ctrl+F searches, Ctrl+, opens settings and F5 refreshes.
